Abstract:
This presentation will discuss how cultural competence as defined by the National Athletic Training Association (NATA) educational competencies can be embedded into practice and the athletic training program (ATP) curriculum utilizing Cultural Humility and Culturally Responsive Pedagogy (CRP). With the general population becoming more diverse, athletic trainers need concrete preparation to work with diverse patients. Studies by Nynas (2015) and Marra et al. (2010) show that a majority of Certified Athletic Trainers and Athletic Training Students do not practice culturally competent patient care. Although many athletic trainers are being exposed to diverse populations through clinical education, educators who can exhibit Cultural Humility and use CRP to incorporate cultural education into practice and the classroom can enhance the educational model to adequately prepare athletic trainers to provide excellent patient care to all.
