Abstract:
Without thorough understanding of the healing process, athletic trainers may not be considering the most appropriate treatments to aid musculoskeletal injury healing and recovery. Inflammation is necessary to protect and heal the body, but application of heat or cold may impede the process. If the first line of defense is grabbing an ice bag, there are more unknowns than knowns on the impact of ice on the healing process. By outlining healing, specifically the inflammatory process, and thermodynamic properties of heat and cold, clinicians will have better knowledge to decide which modality to apply and when following injury.

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe the inflammatory process following injury and the thermodynamic properties of heat and cold.
  • Facilitate proper modality use depending on the current phase of healing.
  • Assess theories of RICE, POLICE and PEACE and LOVE and their place in injury healing.
