Abstract:
Interpersonal communication and other "Soft Skills" have been a topic of discussion recently as something that is lacking in students and young professionals. Research has shown though that these skills have decreased across all generations. As Health Care Providers, Athletic Trainers need to be able to interact and communicate with a wide variety of stakeholders. These skills are ones that all should continue to improve to aid patients in reaching best outcomes.

Objectives:

  • Participants will be able to understand the definition and meaning of Interpersonal Communication Skills., 
  • Participants will be able to understand the importance of IPC in Health Care settings., 
  • Participants will be able to synthesize how IPC skill building can improve their clinical practice., 
  • Participants will be able to apply these skills to their individual clinical practice.

Steven Patterson, EdD, LAT, ATC

Dr. Patterson has been a Program Director at Georgia Southern University for the last 12 years. Previously he spent 4 years as program director at Cedarville University in Ohio. Prior to his academic appointments he served as an athletic trainer at the collegiate level. He continues to work clinically as an AT doing PRN work when needed. His clinical expertise has been in the sport of baseball where he worked with USA Baseball for 12 years and most recently worked with the Savannah Bananas for two seasons. His undergraduate degree is in Exercise Science/AT from Vanguard University of Southern California. His Masters is in Counseling Psychology/Emphasis in Sport from Palm Beach Atlantic University and his EdD is in Health Care Education from Nova Southeastern University.
