Abstract:
The purpose of this course is to make athletic trainers and others who are involved with health care of outdoor activity participants aware of the new NATA position statement on lightning safety. The webinar will promote lightning-safety strategies, encourage an emergency action plan that is venue-specific and unique to lightning safety, identify safe locations from lightning, and outline large-venue planning safety considerations.
Objectives:
- Participants will be able to describe the recommendations for lightning safety.,
- Participants will be able to distinguish the attributes of safe and unsafe locations from lightning hazards.,
- Participants will be able to produce an emergency action plan (EAP) specific to lightning safety.,
- Participants will be able to plan lightning safety measures for a large-venue event.

Katie Walsh Flanagan, EdD, ATC, LAT
Dr. Flanagan has been the Director of the Sports Medicine/Athletic Training Program for East Carolina University since 1995. Originally from Carmel, California, she obtained her Bachelor of Science from Oregon State University in Physical Education and Athletic Training. She received her Masters of Science in Sports Medicine from Illinois State University. Dr. Flanagan served as the Head Athletic Trainer for the Chicago Power Men's Professional Soccer team before returning to California to earn a Doctorate of Education and Administration in 1994 from University of Southern California. Dr. Flanagan is an active member of the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA). She has published numerous articles, chapters, 3 books, and presented internationally, as well as nationally on her research area, which is lightning.
