Abstract:
This presentation will focus on the role personal and professional values have on our ethical decision making processes within the athletic training profession. A comprehensive approach to uncovering personal and professional values that guide our professional behaviors will be the main emphasis of this presentation. Practical situations will be utilized to apply the values construct to ethical dilemmas within the profession.
The NATA Committee on Professional Ethics is responsible for adjudicating ethics complaints, thereby ensuring members are held accountable when they violate the NATA Code of Ethics and NATA Membership Standards. This committee is comprised of members with interests or backgrounds in ethics.
Objectives:
- Participants will be able to identify the role personal and professional values play in ethical decision making.,
- Participants will be able to describe the need for a profession to have and clearly articulate core professional values.,
- Participants will be able to explain the role personal and professional values have on professional behaviors and the role these behaviors play in the resolution of ethical dilemmas.

Kimberly Peer, Ed.D., ATC, FNATA
A 2024 Inductee to the NATA Hall of Fame, Dr. Kimberly Peer is a Full Professor at Kent State University in the MS: Athletic Training and EdD: Interprofessional Leadership programs. She has served as Editor-in-Chief of the Athletic Training Education Journal and has served the NATA, BOC, CAATE, REF and Ohio Athletic Trainers’ Association in extensive leadership roles.
Dr. Peer has been lauded with national, regional, and state level awards for her contributions to the profession and athletic training education, including but not limited to, NATA Fellow and Most Distinguished, National Academies of Practice Distinguished Fellow, OATA Hall of Fame, GLATA Outstanding Educator, and NATA Sayers “Bud” Miller Distinguished Educator Award, and most recently, the Gail Weldon Award of Excellence.
Kimberly has presented on the international and national levels on ethics education and pedagogy. She has published extensively and has co-authored textbooks on professional ethics in athletic training and athletic training pedagogy.

Gretchen Schlabach, PhD, ATC, LAT
My academic scholarship and professional service is in the area of professional ethics, values, and responsible reasoning in athletic training. I am recognized with the Professor Emerita status from Northern Illinois University (NIU) and now an adjunct lecturer in the Doctor of Athletic Training (DAT) program at Florida International University (FIU) and Master's of Science in Athletic Training (MSAT) program at Old Dominion (ODU). Furthermore, my assigned courses include Navigating Academia (FIU) and Professional Ethics in Healthcare (ODU).
Skills and Interests
Experienced Professor with a demonstrated history of working in the higher education industry. Skilled in Athletic Training Accreditation Compliance, Program Evaluation, Curriculum Development, and Public Speaking. Research and professional services include legal, ethical, and regulatory issues in athletic training and promoting awareness, analysis, action, and adherence.
