Abstract:
The purpose of this webinar is to present Athletic Trainers with some of the legal and ethical considerations regarding the use of non HIPAA regulated biometric data. 

Objectives:

  • Define biometric data and how it may differ from traditional personal health information medical sources
  • Summarize the role of wearable technology in the collection of biometric data
  • Summarize legal and ethical considerations of using wearable obtained biometric data
  • Outline recommendations for best practices, for use of wearable biometrics by Athletic Trainers

Joseph B. Myers, PhD, ATC, FNATA

Dr. Joseph Myers joined the Rays in January 2016 as Director of Baseball Performance science. In this role, he works to advance the use of science and technology within the baseball operations department. Myers came to the Rays from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he spent nine years as a professor of Exercise and Sports Science, and an Adjunct Professor of Orthopaedics. He received a bachelor’s degree in athletic training from West Chester (Pa.) University, a master’s in sports medicine from UNC and a Ph.D. in sports medicine from the University of Pittsburgh. Myers also directed the Human Movement Science Doctoral Program while at UNC.
