Abstract:
As the athletic training profession diversifies, employers have been challenged with creating an inclusive culture that welcomes, promotes, and values diversity within the workplace. However, individuals from diverse groups commonly find themselves excluded from networks of people, information, and opportunity. These experiences of exclusion may affect their general sense of well-being, job satisfaction, and organizational commitment. In addition, perceptions of exclusion may also affect an individual´s long-term professional tenure and retention in the athletic training profession. This forum seeks to describe the relationship between organizational diversity, perceived inclusion, and administrative support on job performance and career satisfaction in athletic training. 

Objectives:

  • Critique self-awareness to determine biases that may negatively affect organizational culture., 
  • Recognize the benefits of diversity, equity, inclusion, and access in career satisfaction and professional retention in athletic training., 
  • Identify ways to support diverse and underrepresented individuals to increase organizational commitment and career satisfaction.

Darrell Gililland, EdD, LAT, ATC

DJ Gililland Jr., EdD, LAT, ATC joined the University of Houston’s Department of Health & Human Performance faculty on July 1, 2023. A native of White Deer, Texas, Gililland obtained a Bachelor of Behavioral Science Degree in All-Level Physical Education in 1998 from Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, Texas. After graduating he pursued a Master of Science in Education Degree from Northwest Missouri State University where he also served as a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer for the Football & Baseball Programs. In 2015, he received his Doctor of Education from Texas A&M University and transitioned to teaching in Athletic Training Education programs.

Dr. Gililland has been an active member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) for 27 years and is the recipient of numerous awards and honors including the NATA Service Award, Southwest Athletic Trainers’ Association Bobby Gunn Unsung Hero Award, and the Distinguished Alumni award from Hardin-Simmons University. Clinically, he has served as an athletic trainer within the intercollegiate setting NAIA, NCAA (DI, II, III), and rural public schools in West Texas.

Revay O. Corbett, PhD, ATC, PES

Dr. R.O. Corbett is a Sports Medicine Researcher, Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Consultant, and a Certified Athletic Trainer. Dr. ROC has committed herself to working to promote diverse, equitable, and inclusive practices. Dr. ROC conducts workshops and training sessions for the implementation of culturally competent practices. Dr. ROC specializes in providing services in both Higher Education, and Allied Health professions. Understanding the importance of patient-centered care and student-centered learning, Dr. ROC breaks down the need for empathetic, inclusive and equitable practices to facilitate better outcomes under their social media pseudonym; Abstract AT. Dr. ROC’s research interests include racial disparities in healthcare for active and athletic populations, psychosocial aspects of sports and athletic training, chronic ankle instability and its impact on quality of life, as well as the role fear and confidence play in return from lower extremity injury. Dr. ROC is a former Division I athlete that participated in the sports of lacrosse, bowling and track & field. Her passion and love of sports, education and DEI has always served as motivation for their career ambitions.
