  • In-person attendees can earn a maximum of 40 CEUs: Up to 15 on-site in Philadelphia plus 25 from On-Demand.

Traditional approaches may overlook core contributors such as dysfunctional breathing, impaired intra-abdominal pressure regulation, and pelvic floor dysfunction.     Brittany Braun, DAT, ATC, CSCS

    Brittany Braun, DAT, ATC, CSCS

    Brittany Braun, DAT, MSEd, LAT, ATC, CSCS, RYT-200hr, is an Athletic Trainer with extensive experience in military and tactical human performance. Currently serving as a Military Athletic Trainer with the U.S. Navy, Brittany integrates breathing mechanics, pressure management, and pelvic floor function to improve movement efficiency and reduce low back pain in high-demand populations.

    She earned her Doctorate in Athletic Training from Moravian University, her Master’s in Education with a concentration in Athletic Training from Old Dominion University, and her Bachelor’s in Athletic Training from Alma College.

    Brittany’s scholarly work and clinical practice explore the relationship between the diaphragm, pelvic floor, and core stability, translating current evidence into practical, evidence-informed strategies that bridge the gap between rehabilitation and performance. Her approach emphasizes holistic, functional solutions that challenge traditional views of back pain and promote sustainable movement for both tactical and civilian athletes.

    Michelle Vail, PT, DPT, ATC

    Michelle Vail, PT, DPT, ATC

    Michelle Vail, PT, DPT, LAT, ATC is a physical therapist and athletic trainer who specializes in pelvic floor physical therapy in the tactical athlete community. Her expertise lies in optimizing human performance by addressing the interconnected systems of the body, with an emphasis on incorporating pelvic health into functional training and rehabilitation.  Michelle is passionate about enabling individuals to overcome pain and dysfunction and resorting their capacity to perform at high levels both in daily life and demanding physical environments. 

    Michelle completed her degree in athletic training at Purdue University and obtained her Doctor of Physical Therapy from Army-Baylor University. She combines her understanding of biomechanics, tactical performance, and rehabilitation to develop individualized programs that empower service members to return to peak readiness and achieve higher levels of resilience and performance.

    Breton Asken, PhD, ATC

    Breton Asken, PhD, ATC

    Breton Asken, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Clinical and Health Psychology at the University of Florida. He is a member of the Clinical Core of the 1Florida Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and affiliated with the UF McKnight Brain Institute, Center for Cognitive Aging and Memory, and the UF Brain Injury, Rehabilitation, and Neuroresilience (BRAIN) Center.

    Dr. Asken completed bachelor’s degrees at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (Exercise & Sport Science – Athletic Training, Psychology) and was a research assistant in the Matthew Gfeller Sport-Related Traumatic Brain Injury Research Center. He then earned his doctorate in Clinical Psychology (Neuropsychology track) from the University of Florida and completed his clinical internship in neuropsychology at Brown University. Dr. Asken completed a postdoctoral fellowship in neuropsychology at the UCSF Memory and Aging Center.

    Dr. Asken’s research integrates fluid and brain imaging biomarkers with cognitive and behavioral evaluations to study the complex associations between neuropathological changes and clinical phenotypes among patients with Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. His sub-focus is studying the role that lifetime head trauma plays in later-life neurodegenerative diseases, like chronic traumatic encephalopathy. He currently leads multiple studies validating emerging diagnostic biomarkers for different neurodegenerative diseases, and he is the University of Florida site PI for the DIAGNOSE CTE Research Project II study.

  • Pediatric shoulder and elbow injuries present unique diagnostic and treatment challenges due to immature anatomy and injury patterns distinct from adults. With increased youth participation in overhead sports, this session will review common conditions such as physeal fractures, apophysitis, ligament injuries, osteochondritis dissecans, and instability. We will discuss both surgical and non-operative treatment options, using evidence-based research to guide clinical decision-making. Emphasis will be placed on pediatric-specific exam techniques, imaging interpretation, and management strategies. Attendees will enhance their ability to assess, treat, and rehabilitate these injuries, while improving patient and family education to support optimal outcomes in this population.

    Matthew Brewer, MS, LAT, ATC

    Matthew Brewer, MS, LAT, ATC

    Matthew Brewer is an athletic trainer in the physician's practice setting with over 20 years of experience. He is currently the associate clinical manager for the Sports Medicine Center at Children's Hospital Colorado. Matthew has worked in numerous settings within the Sports Medicine Center, including the secondary school and club outreach setting.  

    However, he transitioned fully into the clinical setting in 2018, and has since found his true home. He has worked with numerous providers within the sports medicine center and orthopedics institute, specifically with our primary care sports medicine team, Sports Medicine Orthopedic surgeons, trauma team, cerebral palsy, and limb deformities. Matthew has given numerous talks about a wide range of athletic training topics at the local, regional, and national levels.  In his spare time, Matthew enjoys spending time with his family including his wife and two boys.  He currently lives in Denver, CO, but is a native Iowan.

    Jay Albright, MD

    Jay Albright, MD

    Jay Albright, MD, is double board certified in both Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery and Orthopedic Sports Medicine, and currently serves as the Surgical Director for the Sports Medicine for Young Athletes Program in the Department of Orthopedics at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Dr. Albright earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan and then went on and earned his medical degree and completed his orthopedic surgical residency at the University of Iowa. Dr. Albright completed his fellowship in Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery at University of California San Diego and completed his fellowship in Orthopedic Sports Medicine Surgery at the Cincinnati Sports Medicine & Orthopedic Center. 

    Before joining Children’s Hospital Colorado he served as the Director of Sports Medicine at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, Florida and in 2013 Dr. Albright was selected to participate in the AOSSM international traveling fellowship tour. Dr. Albright is extremely active in the youth sports community and actively sits on the International Board for Rush Soccer and is a Hall of Fame Physician for the Orange County, Florida School District for his care of Evans Maynard High School. 

    His research interests include maximizing outcomes for ACL injuries and reducing re-tear rates, particularly in the female athlete. That includes gait analysis post-injury ACL and post-surgical ACL. Additional interests include the description of surgical technique for reconstruction of the medial patellofemoral ligament, cartilage regeneration and resurfacing, reduction of pain symptoms after surgery, and the overall prevention of sports injuries.

    Heather Nosky, MS, LAT, ATC

    Heather Nosky, MS, LAT, ATC

    Heather Nosky is a certified athletic trainer at Children’s Hospital Colorado with experience across clinical care, collegiate athletics, and professional sports. She has held athletic training roles with Chiropractic Solutions of Denver, The University of Southern Mississippi, the University of Mobile, Houston Dash, and LSU-Shreveport. She earned her master’s degree in athletic training from Stephen F. Austin State University.

  • The number of elbow UCL injuries in baseball pitchers continues to rise leading to more surgeries and more playing time lost for this specific athlete population. Despite advances in surgical procedures and rehabilitation, the best management strategy is prevention. This specific athlete population often has a unique baseline clinical presentation.  Understanding the risk factors and being able to create an individualized care plan can lead to decreased injury, but also improved performance.  Combining available growing evidence as well as clinician experience and expertise can lead to improved player availability adding value to the role of the athletic trainer.

    Joseph Rauch, PT, ATC

    Joseph Rauch, PT, ATC

    Joseph T. Rauch, DPT, SCS, ATC recently completed his 6th season on the major league medical staff with the Philadelphia Phillies currently serving as Assistant Athletic Trainer. He joined the Phillies in January of 2015 as Minor League Athletic Training and Rehabilitation Coordinator, a position he held until promotion in 2020.  Prior to being hired, Joe worked for NovaCare Rehabilitation in the Philadelphia market and was the physical therapist for LaSalle University Athletics.  He spent the previous 5 years at the University of Cincinnati, most recently as the Head Athletic Trainer for the Athletics Department and Coordinator of Rehabilitation for the Bearcats Football, Basketball and Baseball teams.

    Joe is a 2005 graduate from the University of Pittsburgh with a BS in Rehabilitation Science and a concentration in Athletic Training. In 2009, he received his DPT from Widener University in Chester, PA.  He completed the NovaCare/University of Cincinnati Sports Physical Therapy Residency Program in 2010. In 2014, Joe became a Board-Certified Clinical Specialist in Sports Physical Therapy.  
     
    Born in Columbus, Ohio, Joe currently resides in Tampa, Florida with his wife Sarah, daughter Cora and dog Loretta.

Many face barriers such as fear, lack of mentorship, and low leadership self-efficacy. This session addresses these gaps by exploring key findings from a literature review that demonstrates the importance of early leadership engagement, transformational leadership theory, and mentorship. Participants will learn actionable strategies to enhance leadership development and contribute to the advancement of the profession.

    Shaniece Jackson, DAT, LAT, ATC

    Shaniece Jackson, DAT, LAT, ATC

    Dr. Jackson, an Assistant Athletic Trainer for the Philadelphia Eagles, is a dedicated athletic training professional with a strong background in exercise science, sports medicine, and athlete care. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science with a minor in Psychology from Shippensburg University in 2016, where she also competed on the Women’s Basketball team and discovered her passion for athletic training. Dr. Jackson went on to complete her Master’s degree in Athletic Training at Florida International University in 2018 and earned her Doctor of Athletic Training degree in August 2021.

    From 2018 to 2020, she served as the Head Athletic Trainer for Doral Academy Preparatory School. Dr. Jackson has also been deeply involved in professional service, including roles as the NATA District 2 Representative and Co-Chair of the District 2 Young Professionals Committee (2021–2023) and as a member of the PATS Concussion Taskforce (2022–2025). She currently serves on the PFATS External Education, Research, and Communication Committees, as well as the NATA PRAT Professional Values Work Group.

    Dr. Adriana Pena is an Athletic Trainer who works at Florida Christian School (FCS) in Miami, FL. She is a wife and mother of a beautiful boy. She earned her MS in Athletic Training from Florida International University in 2019. She pursued her Doctor in Athletic Training from A.T. Still University, which she earned in 2022. 

    Dr. Pena is the founder of the Sport Medicine Program at Florida Christian School. She helps students find their passion as she guides them through different healthcare careers. Her goal is to empower and support student-athletes while recovering from injuries. Adriana leads with purpose, balancing her passion for health and education with her commitment to her family.

    Katie Knappenberger, MS, RD, ATC

    Katie Knappenberger, MS, RD, ATC

    Katie Knappenberger, MS, RD, CSSD, ATC is the Program Director of Performance Nutrition at Northwestern Medicine and Northwestern University Athletics, a role she has held since her hire in June 2014. As Northwestern’s first full-time sports dietitian, Katie has led the strategic development and expansion of performance nutrition services from the ground up. Her responsibilities include program design and oversight, budget and fueling station development, policy creation, staff leadership, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the delivery of evidence-based nutrition care to student-athletes within a fully integrated medical model. Under her leadership, the performance nutrition team has grown from a single provider to a multidisciplinary staff supporting comprehensive athlete health and performance initiatives.

    Katie earned her Master of Science in Nutrition and Sports Dietetics from the University of Utah and her Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse. Prior to joining Northwestern, she served as an Assistant Professor and Certified Athletic Trainer at Daytona State College, where she earned tenure while teaching general and sports nutrition courses and providing athletic training services to collegiate basketball programs. She has also held academic and guest lecturer roles at the University of Utah, delivering both university-level instruction and community education.

    A nationally recognized leader in sports dietetics, Katie has been deeply involved with the American Sports and Performance Dietitians Association (ASPDA) through board leadership, advocacy, education, and research initiatives. She served as President of the organization from May 2023 - May 2026. Her professional contributions include serving in multiple national leadership roles (including serving as ASPDA's Liaison to the National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA)), leading webinars and conference sessions, and serving as the lead author on the NATA's Position Statement on The Evaluation of Dietary Supplements for Athlete Safety and Performance.

    Floris Wardenaar, PhD

    Floris C. Wardenaar, PhD, FACSM, is an Associate Professor at the College of Health Solutions at Arizona State University (ASU). Before coming to ASU in 2017 he worked for the Dutch Olympic Committee as a sports dietitian during five Olympic Games from 2008-2016, of which as team lead of the nutrition team during the last 3 years in preparation for the Rio de Janeiro games in Brazil. During this period, he also obtained his PhD at Wageningen University in the Netherlands. 

    Aside from investigating hydration self-assessment in active populations and validating simple and practical methods, that sports health professionals and their athletes can use, his current research focuses on nutritional supplement behavior in athletes, as well as getting a better understanding of gastrointestinal complaints in active populations. Over the last few years, his research has covered the assessment of athletes' dietary intake, athlete sports nutrition knowledge, and the prevalence of GI complaints in athletic populations. He has a keen interest in using simple sensors and measurements as part of field testing. 

    Dr. Wardenaar is an active member of ACSM, APSDA, the Dutch Association for Sports Dietetics, the Dutch Dietetic Association, and he currently serves as Vice-President of PINES, a global organization for Professionals in Nutrition for Exercise and Sport.

    Dr. Scott Cheatham, PhD, DPT, PT, OCS, ATC, CSCS is a Full Professor and Associate Chair in the Department of Kinesiology at CSU Dominguez Hills in Carson, California. He is also owner of SportsPhysioRX, a concierge sports and orthopedic physical therapy company.

    Lindsey Lepley, PhD, ATC

    Dr. Lindsey Lepley is an associate professor of Athletic Training, director of the Comparative Orthopedic Rehabilitation Laboratory, and co-director of the Orthopedic Rehabilitation & Biomechanics Laboratory at the University of Michigan School of Kinesiology. Dr. Lepley’s research program focuses on elucidating the mechanisms that regulate skeletal muscle strength, activation, and structure after traumatic joint injury to establish interventions that optimize muscle recovery. To advance clinical practice, her research group utilizes non-invasive animal injury models and human subject research to design, test, and translate new sports medicine strategies from conception to practice. This rare blend of scientific approaches empowers her lab to make fundamental discoveries about musculoskeletal health that can change rehabilitation. This work has received several research awards, is currently funded by NIH/NIAMS, and has been selected for featured presentations at national and international scientific meetings.

    Joel Luedke, MSe, LAT, ATC, CSCS is a clinical operations manager overseeing the musculoskeletal departments at Olmsted Medical Center. He has worked in the clinical, university, and tactical settings in his career, as well as assisting in academic research around injury risk-reduction and performance. 

    In addition, Joel has tried many “side hustles” along with his daily work. These have included a MLM business, a health-related blog/newsletter, a couple of podcasts and the co-creation of the Athletic Training Daily Journal. Currently, Joel serves as the CEO/Executive Director of Clinically Pressed Co., a 501c3 non-profit focused on health, nutrition, performance, and athlete safety. They also actively raise funds to donate inflatable cold tubs and AEDs to athletic trainers and schools that can’t otherwise afford them.

    James Wilkes, PhD, MEd, ATC is a certified Athletic Trainer with clinical and research training focused in concussion prevention, management, and treatment. As a Research Scientist for the Minds Matter Concussion Program within the Center for Injury Research and Prevention at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, Dr. Wilkes uses his perspective as an active clinician, researcher, and educator to bridge the gaps between breaking research and novel clinical practices, as well as enhancing concussion education and awareness for youth sports programs and surrounding communities. His recent research has focused on the complex interplay between sleep and athletic injuries; primarily concussion.
