Andrew Grundstein, PhD
Andrew Grundstein is a professor of Geography and a member of the Atmospheric Sciences program at the University of Georgia. His research focuses on interactions between climate and human health, with particular emphasis on heat exposure and its impacts on athletes, workers, and children.
Dr. Grundstein has published over 90 peer-reviewed articles in leading scientific journals, and his work has been supported by grants from agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He serves on the editorial board of the International Journal of Biometeorology and on science and medical advisory boards, including the Korey Stringer Institute and the National Heat Safety Coalition, and has previously served on the International Olympic Committee Adverse Weather Impact Expert Working Group for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the Medical Advisory Committee for the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Outdoor Championships in Doha, Qatar.

Robert Huggins, PhD, LAT, ATC
Dr. Robert Huggins is currently the Chief Research Officer and President of Occupational Safety and Athlete Performance at the Korey Stringer Institute. He is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Huggins oversees the operations of the Athlete Performance Testing division of KSI and the Heat Safety Performance Coalition (HSPC) which strives to protect occupational laborers and workers from the dangerous effects of acute and chronic heat exposure. Dr. Huggins is the director of the Athletic Training Locations and Services (ATLAS) Project which keeps track of the level of AT services in over 21,000 secondary schools in the U.S. since 2015.
Dr. Huggins focuses on two major areas of research, 1) athlete/laborer health, safety, and performance and 2) the access and provision of Athletic Training Services to secondary schools. In athletes and laborers, his research interests include the heat illness prevention, thermoregulation, hydration, and monitoring training load/workload and physiological biomarkers for the prevention of injury/illness. Related to AT services, his research focuses on improving the delivery of AT services at the secondary school level, emergency best practices in youth athletes, and the economic impact of medical services rendered by ATs. Dr. Huggins has been a lead or co-author on ~70 publications) and has delivered ~80 professional presentations throughout the US.
Dr. Huggins has provided heat safety policy and risk mitigation services/expertise to the airline, food, construction, manufacturing, and postal delivery service industries. He has provided expert advice and services to the US Soccer Women’s National Team, Olympians in several sports, professional endurance athletes, and football players. Dr. Huggins also has a great deal of experience at mass medical events such as the Falmouth Road Race, Boston Marathon, and Marine Corps Marathon where he has treated more than 80 cases of exertional heat stroke. Dr. Huggins is a licensed Athletic Trainer since 2007 and received his bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from the University of Connecticut in 2007, his master’s degree in Athletic Training from the University of Virginia in 2008, his doctoral degree from the University of Connecticut in 2014 and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at UConn from 2014-2017.

The updated NATA Inter-Association Consensus Statement on Psychological Concerns in Collegiate Student-Athletes provides evidence on antecedents of risk to mental health. The antecedents of risk that the athletic trainer should be aware of in the student-athletes are: Social Determinants of Health challenges, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), and traumatic events. This presentation will provide data, and practical information on these antecedents of risk in developing a psychological concern in student-athletes.

Timothy Neal, MS, ATC, CCISM
Timothy Neal, MS, ATC, CCISM is a certified athletic trainer and National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Hall of Fame member. Mr. Neal is dually credentialed as an athletic trainer and as a licensed social worker in the state of Michigan where he provides therapy for clients in the Ann Arbor area. Mr. Neal spent 35 years as a clinical athletic trainer and adjunct professor at Syracuse University, and for ten years was the Athletic Training Program Director at Concordia University Ann Arbor. Mr. Neal has chaired two NATA sponsored Inter-Association Consensus Statements on psychological concerns in student-athletes, the first one on intercollegiate athletes in 2013, followed by another Statement in 2015 for interscholastic athletes.
Mr. Neal is certified in critical incident stress management by the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF) and is an approved ICISF instructor in CISM. Mr. Neal is a founding member of the NATA ATs Care committee. Presently, Mr. Neal is the clinical director of District IV ATs Care program. Mr. Neal serves as chair of the state of Michigan’s Health Profession Recovery Committee. Mr. Neal was a member of the 2013 NCAA task force on student-athlete mental health and wellness. Mr. Neal is the NATA liaison to the Alliance of Social Workers in Sport. Mr. Neal holds a bachelor’s degree in education and a Master’s degree in social work from Ohio University. Mr. Neal also earned a Master’s degree in education from Syracuse University.

Performance of ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) reconstruction surgery recently increased 193% over a 10 year span. However, these injuries impact a small percentage of athletes including baseball players, gymnasts, javelin throwers, and wrestlers. Being that UCL injuries occurs in a small subset of the athletic populations, not every athletic trainer has the ability to see this injury with significant volume. Given the rarity in most occupational settings for ATs, it is worthwhile to know the path from diagnosis to treatment options and from the operating room back to the playing field.

Frank Alexander, MS, ATC
Frank Alexander, MS, ATC is an athletic trainer at Columbia University Irving Medical Center where he works alongside Dr. Chris Ahmad, serving as the lead athletic trainer within Dr. Ahmad's sports medicine practice. Over his career, Frank has established himself as an expert in the baseball sports medicine landscape. He has been an integral part of Dr. Ahmad's clinical team since 2015 and is responsible for coordinating the medical care of many elite athletes including the New York Yankees and a wide range of collegiate, amateur, and high school athletes from across the globe.
A former collegiate baseball player, Frank's primary focus in the office has been caring for baseball players at all levels. He has a special interest in injuries to the throwing shoulder and elbow. He serves as a trusted advisor to players, their families, coaches, and agents, as well as the athletic trainers, physical therapists, and physicians who care for baseball players.
Academically, Frank has authored numerous textbook chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles related to baseball sports medicine. He has also given over 50 lectures on baseball injuries, treatment, and prevention to sports medicine healthcare professionals, coaches, players, and parents.
His current research focuses on rehab protocols, return to throw progressions, and the psychological component of UCL injury.
Frank, his wife Kelly, and their daughters Adeline and Emilia live in New York with their dogs Charlie and Sadie.

As a result, patient encounters and treatment decisions can be challenging to navigate. In this lecture, we will cover a variety of pain principles including nociception, pain perception, central and peripheral sensitization, and a systematic approach to evaluating and quantifying musculoskeletal pain (quantitative sensory testing, patient-reported outcome measures). Kate Jochimsen, PhD, ATC
Dr. Kate Jochimsen is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, a researcher at the Center for Health Outcomes and Interdisciplinary Research at Massachusetts General Hospital, and an adjunct assistant professor at the MGH Institute of Health Professions. She earned her M.S. in Athletic Training from Florida International University, her Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Sciences from the University of Kentucky and completed her postdoctoral training in biomechanics at Ohio State University.
Her work “bridges the gap” between sports medicine and psychology, primarily focusing on chronic pain and hip injuries. An expert in psychologically informed practice, she is passionate about guiding sports medicine clinicians to communicate effectively about mental health and integrate psychological and mind-body skills into rehabilitation.
She is the 2025 recipient of the NATA Foundation New Investigator Award, and her research is supported by organizations such as the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense.

Ryan Moran, PhD, ATC
Dr. Ryan N. Moran is an Associate Professor in the CAATE-accredited Athletic Training Program at The University of Alabama. He is currently the Director of the Athletic Training Research Laboratory and a research member of the Integrative Center for Athletic and Sport Technology, on UA’s campus in Tuscaloosa. Dr. Moran is also an associate member of the Concussion in Para Sport Group.
Dr. Moran’s research interests include baseline and post-injury clinical evaluation of sport-related concussion. His primary work centers on modifying factors of sensorimotor interaction, neurocognition, and vestibular/ocular motor outcomes in collegiate athletes.
Dr. Moran, a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in athletic training from East Stroudsburg University, later earning his doctorate in Kinesiology from Michigan State University.

Steven Feldman, DPT, ATC, CSCS
Steven Feldman, DPT, ATC, CSCS is a Coordinator of Rehabilitation for the Philadelphia Eagles. He is a Certified Athletic Trainer and Doctor of Physical Therapy who brings 13 seasons of experience in sports medicine.
Throughout his tenure, he has contributed to the team’s success, including two Super Bowl championships. Steve holds numerous certifications in athletic training, physical therapy, and strength and conditioning, demonstrating his commitment to excellence and ongoing professional development.

Michael Thomas, DPT, ATC, CSCS
Michael Thomas, DPT, PT, ATC, CSCS is a dedicated physical therapist and athletic trainer with a strong background in sports medicine. He earned his bachelor’s degree in athletic training from the University of Pittsburgh in 2015, followed by a Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2018.
While completing his studies, he gained hands-on experience as a student athletic intern with the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2014 season, where he worked closely with professional athletes and medical staff. In 2019, Michael joined the Baltimore Ravens as a physical therapist and assistant athletic trainer, where he continues to combine his expertise in rehabilitation and performance care. His work focuses on helping athletes recover from injuries, optimize performance, and maintain peak physical health throughout the demanding football season.

Peter De Luca, MD
Dr. DeLuca, an accomplished board-certified sports medicine and orthopedic surgeon has dedicated his career to treating athletes of all ages. His areas of interest include ACL reconstruction, shoulder labral repair, and other advanced shoulder and knee arthroscopic procedures. Dr. DeLuca graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He completed his residency and fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia and Sports Medicine Fellowship at Yale University.
Dr. DeLuca is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. During his career, Dr. Deluca served as the former head team Orthopedist for the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team. He also currently serves as the Head Team Orthopedist for the Philadelphia Eagles. His hospital affiliations include Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center and Jersey City Medical Center at RWJBarnabas Health.

Specifically, legal, professional, and logistical barriers exist that neutralize the utility of consensus recommendations, raising tangible concerns for students and healthcare professionals within higher education. Zachary Bevilacqua, PhD, ATC
Dr. Zachary Bevilacqua is an Assistant Professor of Athletic Training at SUNY Brockport in Rochester NY and a Concussion Initiative Advisory Committee member for the Brain Injury Association of New York State (BIANYS). His record of publication in the area of return to learn for university and college students (RTLU) led to an invitation to join BIANYS in their creation of a RTLU handbook.
Since pursuing his RTLU interests in 2020, he has published six peer-reviewed RTLU papers, a rapid response in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, with two additional RTLU papers awaiting review. His research collectively aims to establish RTLU guidance that is accessible, reproducible, robust, and specific to higher education.

This session will present an updated best-practice framework for conducting preparticipation physical evaluations (PPEs) that emphasizes the critical need for increased interdisciplinary collaboration. Despite their widespread use, the PPE process lacks evidence to support their effectiveness in identifying risk factors for mental health challenges and musculoskeletal injuries. Athletic trainers serve on the front lines in managing routine and catastrophic events specific to sudden death, mental health, and orthopedics. However, the approach to these conditions remains largely reactive. Given the rising physical and psychological demands placed on student-athletes, athletic trainers have a responsibility to implement evidence-informed changes that align PPE standards with current best practices.

Dr. Zachary Winkelmann is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Arnold School of Public Health at The University of South Carolina. Andrew Grundstein is a professor of Geography and a member of the Atmospheric Sciences program at the University of Georgia. His research focuses on interactions between climate and human health, with particular emphasis on heat exposure and its impacts on athletes, workers, and children.
Dr. Grundstein has published over 90 peer-reviewed articles in leading scientific journals, and his work has been supported by grants from agencies such as the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. He serves on the editorial board of the International Journal of Biometeorology and on science and medical advisory boards, including the Korey Stringer Institute and the National Heat Safety Coalition, and has previously served on the International Olympic Committee Adverse Weather Impact Expert Working Group for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and the Medical Advisory Committee for the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Outdoor Championships in Doha, Qatar.

Dr. Robert Huggins is currently the Chief Research Officer and President of Occupational Safety and Athlete Performance at the Korey Stringer Institute. He is also an Assistant Professor in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Huggins oversees the operations of the Athlete Performance Testing division of KSI and the Heat Safety Performance Coalition (HSPC) which strives to protect occupational laborers and workers from the dangerous effects of acute and chronic heat exposure. Dr. Huggins is the director of the Athletic Training Locations and Services (ATLAS) Project which keeps track of the level of AT services in over 21,000 secondary schools in the U.S. since 2015.
Dr. Huggins focuses on two major areas of research, 1) athlete/laborer health, safety, and performance and 2) the access and provision of Athletic Training Services to secondary schools. In athletes and laborers, his research interests include the heat illness prevention, thermoregulation, hydration, and monitoring training load/workload and physiological biomarkers for the prevention of injury/illness. Related to AT services, his research focuses on improving the delivery of AT services at the secondary school level, emergency best practices in youth athletes, and the economic impact of medical services rendered by ATs. Dr. Huggins has been a lead or co-author on ~70 publications) and has delivered ~80 professional presentations throughout the US.
Dr. Huggins has provided heat safety policy and risk mitigation services/expertise to the airline, food, construction, manufacturing, and postal delivery service industries. He has provided expert advice and services to the US Soccer Women’s National Team, Olympians in several sports, professional endurance athletes, and football players. Dr. Huggins also has a great deal of experience at mass medical events such as the Falmouth Road Race, Boston Marathon, and Marine Corps Marathon where he has treated more than 80 cases of exertional heat stroke. Dr. Huggins is a licensed Athletic Trainer since 2007 and received his bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training from the University of Connecticut in 2007, his master’s degree in Athletic Training from the University of Virginia in 2008, his doctoral degree from the University of Connecticut in 2014 and completed a post-doctoral fellowship at UConn from 2014-2017.

Timothy Neal, MS, ATC, CCISM is a certified athletic trainer and National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Hall of Fame member. Mr. Neal is dually credentialed as an athletic trainer and as a licensed social worker in the state of Michigan where he provides therapy for clients in the Ann Arbor area. Mr. Neal spent 35 years as a clinical athletic trainer and adjunct professor at Syracuse University, and for ten years was the Athletic Training Program Director at Concordia University Ann Arbor. Mr. Neal has chaired two NATA sponsored Inter-Association Consensus Statements on psychological concerns in student-athletes, the first one on intercollegiate athletes in 2013, followed by another Statement in 2015 for interscholastic athletes.
Mr. Neal is certified in critical incident stress management by the International Critical Incident Stress Foundation (ICISF) and is an approved ICISF instructor in CISM. Mr. Neal is a founding member of the NATA ATs Care committee. Presently, Mr. Neal is the clinical director of District IV ATs Care program. Mr. Neal serves as chair of the state of Michigan’s Health Profession Recovery Committee. Mr. Neal was a member of the 2013 NCAA task force on student-athlete mental health and wellness. Mr. Neal is the NATA liaison to the Alliance of Social Workers in Sport. Mr. Neal holds a bachelor’s degree in education and a Master’s degree in social work from Ohio University. Mr. Neal also earned a Master’s degree in education from Syracuse University.

Frank Alexander, MS, ATC is an athletic trainer at Columbia University Irving Medical Center where he works alongside Dr. Chris Ahmad, serving as the lead athletic trainer within Dr. Ahmad's sports medicine practice. Over his career, Frank has established himself as an expert in the baseball sports medicine landscape. He has been an integral part of Dr. Ahmad's clinical team since 2015 and is responsible for coordinating the medical care of many elite athletes including the New York Yankees and a wide range of collegiate, amateur, and high school athletes from across the globe.
A former collegiate baseball player, Frank's primary focus in the office has been caring for baseball players at all levels. He has a special interest in injuries to the throwing shoulder and elbow. He serves as a trusted advisor to players, their families, coaches, and agents, as well as the athletic trainers, physical therapists, and physicians who care for baseball players.
Academically, Frank has authored numerous textbook chapters and peer-reviewed journal articles related to baseball sports medicine. He has also given over 50 lectures on baseball injuries, treatment, and prevention to sports medicine healthcare professionals, coaches, players, and parents.
His current research focuses on rehab protocols, return to throw progressions, and the psychological component of UCL injury.

Dr. Kate Jochimsen is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, a researcher at the Center for Health Outcomes and Interdisciplinary Research at Massachusetts General Hospital, and an adjunct assistant professor at the MGH Institute of Health Professions. She earned her M.S. in Athletic Training from Florida International University, her Ph.D. in Rehabilitation Sciences from the University of Kentucky and completed her postdoctoral training in biomechanics at Ohio State University.
Her work “bridges the gap” between sports medicine and psychology, primarily focusing on chronic pain and hip injuries. An expert in psychologically informed practice, she is passionate about guiding sports medicine clinicians to communicate effectively about mental health and integrate psychological and mind-body skills into rehabilitation.
She is the 2025 recipient of the NATA Foundation New Investigator Award, and her research is supported by organizations such as the National Institutes of Health and the Department of Defense.

Dr. Moran’s research interests include baseline and post-injury clinical evaluation of sport-related concussion. His primary work centers on modifying factors of sensorimotor interaction, neurocognition, and vestibular/ocular motor outcomes in collegiate athletes.
Dr. Moran, a native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in athletic training from East Stroudsburg University, later earning his doctorate in Kinesiology from Michigan State University.

Michael Thomas, DPT, PT, ATC, CSCS is a dedicated physical therapist and athletic trainer with a strong background in sports medicine. He earned his bachelor’s degree in athletic training from the University of Pittsburgh in 2015, followed by a Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2018.
While completing his studies, he gained hands-on experience as a student athletic intern with the Pittsburgh Steelers during the 2014 season, where he worked closely with professional athletes and medical staff. In 2019, Michael joined the Baltimore Ravens as a physical therapist and assistant athletic trainer, where he continues to combine his expertise in rehabilitation and performance care. His work focuses on helping athletes recover from injuries, optimize performance, and maintain peak physical health throughout the demanding football season.

Dr. DeLuca, an accomplished board-certified sports medicine and orthopedic surgeon has dedicated his career to treating athletes of all ages. His areas of interest include ACL reconstruction, shoulder labral repair, and other advanced shoulder and knee arthroscopic procedures. Dr. DeLuca graduated from Georgetown University School of Medicine in Washington, D.C. He completed his residency and fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia and Sports Medicine Fellowship at Yale University.
Dr. DeLuca is board-certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. During his career, Dr. Deluca served as the former head team Orthopedist for the Philadelphia Flyers hockey team. He also currently serves as the Head Team Orthopedist for the Philadelphia Eagles. His hospital affiliations include Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center and Jersey City Medical Center at RWJBarnabas Health.

Dr. Zachary Bevilacqua is an Assistant Professor of Athletic Training at SUNY Brockport in Rochester NY and a Concussion Initiative Advisory Committee member for the Brain Injury Association of New York State (BIANYS). His record of publication in the area of return to learn for university and college students (RTLU) led to an invitation to join BIANYS in their creation of a RTLU handbook.
Since pursuing his RTLU interests in 2020, he has published six peer-reviewed RTLU papers, a rapid response in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, with two additional RTLU papers awaiting review. His research collectively aims to establish RTLU guidance that is accessible, reproducible, robust, and specific to higher education.

He has worked at the NAIA and Division 1 level and is currently a PRN Athletic Trainer for Prisma Healthcare and Riverbluff High School. Dr. Zachary Winkelmann is a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Arnold School of Public Health at The University of South Carolina. Currently, Zachary is the Director of Clinical Education for the post-professional Athletic Training Program. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Texas Lutheran University in 2013 his master’s degree from Indiana State University in 2015, and his PhD in Curriculum and Instruction program with a concentration in Athletic Training Education from Indiana State in 2019.
Dr. Winkelmann is a certified athletic trainer and researcher with 151 peer-reviewed publications and several national and international presentations focused on telemedicine, simulation-based learning, patient-centered care, and mental health.
