Lower extremity injuries represent the majority of athletic encounters in training rooms and sports medicine clinics. Master clinician Stuart Hinds presents a targeted soft-tissue course covering advanced sports massage strategies for the lower kinetic chain, from the hip complex down to the foot.
Athletic Trainers will gain practical experience with soft-tissue techniques including broad-contact effleurage, deep tissue petrissage, neuromuscular therapy, and active motion release. The curriculum emphasizes common athletic presentations including gluteal tendinopathies, hamstring strains, iliotibial band friction, patellar tracking issues, shin splints, Achilles tendon pain, and plantar fasciitis.
The hip plays a central role in lower-limb movement and force transfer. Restrictions or altered function around the hip may influence loading throughout the thigh, leg, ankle, and foot, contributing to recurring symptoms or reduced athletic performance.
This course takes a connected approach to assessment and treatment. Stuart demonstrates methods for addressing hip restriction and then applies sports massage and rehabilitation principles to common lower-extremity presentations including shin splints, Achilles tendon pain, and plantar fasciitis.
By understanding muscular anatomy, fascial continuity, and biomechanical stress pathways, Athletic Trainers will learn how to integrate structured pre-event, inter-event, post-event, and restorative sports massage protocols into conditioning, rehabilitation, and recovery plans.
Learning Objectives
Upon successful completion of this course, learners will be able to:
Identify key anatomical soft-tissue structures and fascial lines governing force transmission from the hip to the foot.Apply targeted soft-tissue release techniques for gluteal, hip rotator, and hamstring tightness in athletic populations.Demonstrate specific therapeutic massage strokes to address lower-leg pathologies, including medial tibial stress syndrome and Achilles tendinopathy.Differentiate between pre-event, inter-event, and post-event sports massage techniques regarding application timing and physiological intent.Integrate soft-tissue lower-extremity protocols into broader neuromuscular re-education and return-to-play rehabilitation plans. What You Will Learn
Build a connected understanding of lower-extremity mechanics, assessment, sports massage, and recovery strategies from the hip through the foot.

Abstract:
Athletic trainers care for a diverse patient population that includes a growing number of neurodivergent athletes, yet few educational resources address how to meet their needs. This course explores how the athletic training facility can become a place of both physical and emotional safety for these athletes. Participants will learn to distinguish between common neurodivergent diagnoses, with a focus on ADHD and autism, and will see how traits such as impulsivity, hyperactivity, inattention, and communication and social-interaction differences may show up in the athlete population. The course explains how neurodivergent nervous systems can register everyday sensory input as a threat, and why sensory overload from lighting, noise, smell, temperature, touch, and unpredictable environments can be a barrier to care. Participants will leave with practical, low-cost accommodations they can put in place right away, such as quiet hours, fragrance-free products, adjustable lighting, consistent routines, and clearly posted expectations, along with reflection prompts to guide meaningful change in their own setting.Learning Objectives:
- Distinguish difference in neurodivergent diagnoses.
- Provide applicable, actionable steps to create an athletic training safe space.
- Understand how neurodivergence presents in the student-athlete population.

Sports performance technology, specifically force plates, has progressed in its measurement of athletes’ biometric data related to load, strength, and limb force production. Current research reports the performance-based assessments of reactive strength and neuromuscular capacity, measured indirectly using force places. This session will introduce the current evidence, performance variables, and tests utilized during force plate evaluations and how data can inform rehabilitation and return-to-play decisions. Further, this session will present techniques to monitor athlete readiness and performance to determine appropriate load and recovery recommendations. This technology will enhance the functional objective evaluation of recovering athletes’ progression and return in sports.
This presentation is a replay from NATA 2024 in New Orleans, providing another opportunity to access its valuable content and insights.
Abstract:
Sports performance technology, specifically force plates, has progressed in its measurement of athletes’ biometric data related to load, strength, and limb force production. Current research reports the performance-based assessments of reactive strength and neuromuscular capacity, measured indirectly using force places. This session will introduce the current evidence, performance variables, and tests utilized during force plate evaluations and how data can inform rehabilitation and return-to-play decisions. Further, this session will present techniques to monitor athlete readiness and performance to determine appropriate load and recovery recommendations. This technology will enhance the functional objective evaluation of recovering athletes’ progression and return in sports.Learning Objectives:
- Describe the theoretical consideration for selecting testing metrics based on desired outcomes.
- Differentiate the appropriate testing modality and training intervention based on the rehabilitation phase and progression along with sport-specific needs/requirements.
- Develop a plan to utilize force plates as an adjunct assessment measure for lower limb injuries.
- Implement the appropriate testing options and training interventions for performance readiness and athlete monitoring.

The physician practice setting has increased job opportunities for ATs. The duties the AT may fulfill in a clinic has also evolved to include wide range of skills and tasks, some that may overlap with other health care professionals on the same sports medicine team. Data exists that identifies benefits of ATs working in physician practice to improve productivity and patient outcomes. However, there can still be a significant variable in workflow and specific role for the ATs, potentially creating misunderstanding for ATs new to the setting and administrators or team members of other disciplines.
